Importance of Brush Cleaning

Unsanitary makeup brushes can negatively effect the skin by re-introducing harmful bacteria with every use. This can lead to overall complexion issues but more importantly, it risks your overall health.

Four of the most common complications that come from the use of dirty brushes are: conjunctivitis, MRSA, cold sores and acne.

Conjunctivitis can be caused by irritation and allergy and is spread through contaminated products and tools. It starts off as pink eye, then progresses into a highly contagious pus that sticks to the lashes and can also stick the eyes together.

MRSA is one of the most serious forms of bacteria and can nest into your brushes and infect the skin by re-entering through the pores, abrasions on the face or through mucus membranes (eyes, nose and mouth). This bacteria is so dangerous as it is known to be antibody-resistant, therefore very difficult to be treated.

Cold sores can come from contaminated products such as lipstick and lip gloss which is the perfect environment for viruses to thrive. This form of the Herpes virus can survive outside the body and can spread through contaminated tools or products. This virus, although common, can pose a serious threat to health for those with weak immune systems.

Acne can be aggravated by makeup brushes as they are a breeding ground for bacteria if not cleaned sufficiently. Those who suffer from acne may spend much of their time with skin care to then re-apply spot causing germs to the skin making the skin care completely ineffective.

Misuse of Industrial Solvents (rubbing alcohol):

Non-cosmetics solvents are still used regularly to clean and sanitize makeup brushes with users being unaware of the adverse affect it has on the skin and health. These products are intended for industrial purposes only (such as cleaning machinery) and should not be handled for cosmetic use or used on or near the skin. They contain chemical compounds which leaves a dangerous residue on the skin that is absorbed into the bloodstream. This leaves a huge list of problems as it can then effect the body's vital organs.
